May coal exports from Canada's Ridley Terminals totaled 830,659 metric tons, down 4.4% from April and down 40.3% from the year-ago month, according to data that the Prince Rupert Port Authority released last week.

The decline comes as Pacific metallurgical coal prices continue to show weakness. Platts assessed the price for hard coking coal FOB Australia at $113/mt Monday, down more than 70% from its $378/mt high in January 2011.

Ann Marie Hann, president of the Calgary-based Coal Association of Canada, said Monday the drop in met pricing is largely because of a flood of supply from Australia. She suggested that Canadian met coal exports are likely to decline further, given that "quite a few producers are producing at a loss."(
