A weak rand is bringing a welcome reprieve to the South African chrome ore and ferrochrome (FeCr) producers, market analysts told delegates at Metal Bulletin's Chromite 2014 conference in Johannesburg.
Additionally, China is expected to import more ferro-chrome from South Africa because it is unable to secure sufficient supplies of UG2 chrome ore for its own smelter blends, and will do so for the next 12 to 18 months, according to Lara Smith, ceo of Core Consultants, as a result of the five-month-long strike that caused production stoppages. While UG2 production has not stabilised, insiders expect FeCr demand to be steady from main buyers.
