The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) called for the next federal government to start action against the US trade tariff and policy to protect the industry from dumping and subsidized imports.

The Trump administration has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian steel as a further tariff on many other industries that are related to steel produced in Canada, including automobiles, auto parts, etc. Given the above conditions, the association asked for action through additional tariffs and new Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) resources to prevent unfairly traded products from flowing to Canada.

The association mentioned that Canadian steelmakers look for major changes in public procurement at all levels of government that make Canada-made steel the priority in public structure projects. Besides, the federal government should adopt new changes in carbon pricing and give provinces more autonomy to adapt the system.
