US President Trump's planned increase of US steel and aluminum tariffs to 50% starting June 4 has drawn sharp condemnation from the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA). Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the CSPA, stated the move essentially closes the US market to Canadian industry for half of its production, predicting mass disruption and negative consequences across integrated steel supply chains.
Cobden urged the Canadian government to immediately reinstate retaliatory steel tariffs matching the US rates and implement new border tariffs to prevent unfair steel imports into Canada. She stressed Canadian steel's strategic importance for economic and national security, supporting sectors like energy, automotive, manufacturing, and defense. The CSPA views Trump’s announcement as a severe blow requiring immediate governmental action.
