The EU Council has adopted a resolution to extend the suspension of EU safeguard measures on iron and steel imports from Ukraine for three years, effective today (June 6). This decision is to alleviate economic difficulties faced by Ukrainian producers and exporters due to the ongoing war.
While offering crucial support, the European Commission retains the power to re-impose these measures for specific products for up to twelve months. This suspension could be lifted if imports from Ukraine significantly harm or threaten to harm the Union's domestic industry.
The EU initially implemented safeguard measures on certain iron and steel imports in 2018 to protect its producers from global oversupply, with Ukraine previously exempted as part of wartime assistance.
