Global mining company Rio Tinto's copper production, including copper in concentrate and refined metal, rose by 15% year on year to 229,000 tons in April-June 2025. This increase was mainly due to record-high output from its Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia, which produced 87,000 tons of copper in concentrate, a year-on-year increase of 65%.
The company now expects its 2025 copper production to be at the upper end of its 780,000-850,000 ton guidance.
Copper concentrate production at the Escondida mine in Chile increased by 4% year on year to 87,000 tons despite lower ore grades. However, refining operations at Escondida and the Kennecott mine in the US had slower activity, with Kennecott's refining output decreasing by 16% due to geological challenges.
Rio Tinto is expanding Kennecott's mine capacity by 250,000 tons per year, with completion expected by late 2025.
