India's Ministry of Steel has revised its policy on Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP), with the latest amendment on July 25, 2025. This update mandates that government ministries and departments must procure iron and steel products made entirely within the country.
The move is part of the government's strategy to reduce import dependency and strengthen the domestic steel industry. A new list of capital goods that can be imported has been released, along with required local content percentages.
Additionally, the government has relaxed entry barriers for Indian technology suppliers to participate in tenders for new steel plants and related infrastructure.
The guidelines address the operational experience gap between Indian and foreign companies, promoting self-reliance in steelmaking technologies.
