Indonesian coal miners halted spot market exports following the government’s proposed production cuts. The move made it harder for Asian buyers to obtain coal from Indonesia. Last month, production quotas for large mining companies were set 40% to 70% below 2025 output as part of a plan to reduce overall production by nearly a quarter and support global coal prices.
The Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) opposed the policy, warning of potential layoffs and mine closures. APBI deputy chairman H. Kristiono said production continues but below full capacity, with spot shipments temporarily restricted. Long-term contracts are still being fulfilled, though some miners are considering force majeure cancellations.
