A major primary aluminum facility in Abu Dhabi expects up to twelve months for a full production recovery after sustaining severe infrastructure damage on March 28. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) reported that its Al Taweelah smelter underwent an emergency shutdown, affecting a site that produced 1.6 million tons of metal in 2025.
Although alumina refining and recycling operations might resume sooner, restoring all reduction cells remains a lengthy process.
This disruption arrives as global inventories sit at low levels, worsened by regional transport interference in the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminum prices have hiked by more than 10%.
EGA is now coordinating with international customers regarding delayed shipments, as the loss of this output removes a significant portion of the global supply buffer.
