Brazilian pig iron was previously exempt from US import tariffs set for November 2025. But in a new list released by the US Trade Representative (USTR) on June 1, it was left out. That means Brazilian pig iron will now face a 25% import tariff in the US, raising concerns for the industry.
The Federation of Industries of Minas Gerais (Fiemg) said that the increase in trade barriers created uncertainty for producers and disrupted business planning. It could also negatively impact investment, production, revenue, and employment.
The cancellation of the US tariff exemption on Brazilian pig iron will deal a heavy blow to the industry in Minas Gerais, particularly in Sete Lagoas, a major exporting hub.
In response, Brazilian officials are currently in talks with the USTR in an effort to get pig iron added back to the exemption list.
