Securing stable supplies has surpassed price and demand as the primary focus for European stainless steel buyers amidst rising trade barriers.

At the British Stainless Steel Association (BSSA) conference on June 11, 2026, MEPS analysts explained that growing protectionism limits sourcing options. Notably, the UK plans to slash tariff-rate quotas by 60% and double above-quota tariffs to 50% on July 1, introducing new limits on stainless steel long products.

In addition, environmental taxes such as the EU's carbon border mechanism create regional price variations.

Despite weak demand in Europe, MEPS’s world average stainless steel prices have risen by nearly 10% so far this year. This growth relates to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which drove up shipping costs, inflated raw material prices like molybdenum, and prompted the European Central Bank (ECB) to raise interest rates to 2.25%.
