Latin American countries argue against new US tariffs under Section 301

Several Latin American countries have asked the United States to exempt them from the proposed new tariffs (between 10% and 12.5%), arguing that they already enforce strict laws against forced labor in their supply chains and that the measure based on Section 301 is unjustified.
Representatives from Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Ecuador defended the integrity of their trade practices. Meanwhile, a group of US attorneys general also questioned the legality of these tariffs, stating that they appear to be a disguised attempt to arbitrarily impose global tariffs.
Finally, US steelmakers urged the exemption of pig iron imported from Brazil. They warn that including this raw material, vital for their electric arc furnaces, would significantly increase their costs, placing them at a clear competitive disadvantage compared to other international rivals.
