Brazil questions new EU steel restrictions and demands compensation for trade impact

Brazil has expressed its rejection of the European Union's new measures limiting steel imports. The Brazilian government maintains that the 47% reduction in tariff-free quotas and the 50% tariff for imports exceeding the duty-free quota do not resolve global overproduction, negatively impacting trading partners.
Brazilian authorities denounced this European measure as lacking an agreement on economic compensation, such as that established by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), calling the European policy unilateral. According to the Brazilian government, restricting market access for countries that are not responsible for the global oversupply could only provoke an escalation of trade retaliation.
The European Commission justifies the tightening of restrictions as a necessary protectionist measure to strengthen its industry, which is operating at 65% of its capacity.
While the bloc seeks to mitigate dumping and sectoral unemployment, Brazil insists on continuing negotiations to find an equitable solution.
