Lonmin’s quarterly chrome ore sales have fallen 69% year-on-year as miners at the world’s largest platinum producers continue to strike over pay in South Africa.

Lonmin sold 116,279 tonnes of chrome ore - a by-product of platinum - in the three months to March 31, 2014, compared with 373,459 tonnes for the same period in 2013. The strike - affecting workers at Lonmin, Implats and Anglo Platinum - started in January and has contributed to rising prices for UG2 chrome ore. The three producers released a statement on Monday condemning recent acts of violence against employees attempting to return to work.
